Former Jordan High linebacker Roger Dansby's football career got off to a rocky beginning.

The 1957 graduate completes his Red Jacket journey tonight with induction into the JVHS Athletic Hall of Fame.

The third induction class is anchored by the 1953 state championship track team. Members of the team include L.C. MacQuirter, James "Bubba" Ferrell, Robert Smith, Charles Cox, James Story, Coach Bill Godwin and Joe Scarborough. Also being honored are Jan Commander, Kenneth Vann, Phillip Clark and Dansby.

The induction ceremony will be held at 6 o'clock at the St. Luke United Methodist Church Activity Center.

"I went to elementary and junior high in Bibb City," Dansby said.  "Before my junior year, I was offered a job laying floor tiles for 75 cents an hour. I didn't go out for football, so I missed all the preseason work."  When fall came, Dansby joined the squad and was placed on the B team.  "I was put at linebacker, and when the junior varsity season was over, I was pulled up to the varsity. At that time, almost everybody played both offense and defense.  My first game was at Memorial Stadium. Coach put me in and we found out that my strength was making tackles," Dansby said.  Dansby and the Jackets got off to a strong start in his senior season.  "We broke out of the gate well," Dansby said. "We won our first 4 games. Then we lost our two quarterbacks.  "Both Roger Davis and Billy Goss were married. Back then there was a rule that you could go to night school if you were married, but couldn't go to regular school. They found out after our fourth game. We were down to our third string quarterback."  Godwin had only 21 players on his team for Dansby's senior year.  "Our coach was an All-American at Georgia and he knew everybody in the state," Dansby said.  "We went to Chattanooga to play Chattanooga Central. They were called the Purple Pounders. That's what they did. They pounded us purple. It was cold and drizzled rain. It was a miserable night."  In addition to playing football, Dansby ran track for the Red Jackets.

The JVHS Athletic Hall of Fame inducted its inaugural class in 2010. The first honorees were William Screws, Jimmy Griggs, Tony Pearce, Chuck Hurston and the 1971 state championship baseball team.  The 2011 class honored Dennie Trotter, Ben Garnto, Richard Miles and the Jackets' 1943 state championship basketball team.
